A Heart Promptly Offered: The Revolutionary Leadership of John Calvin by David W. Hall
$16.95 | Hardcover | 360 pages | Cumberland House Publishing
OUR PRICE: $13.75
Calvin was much more than a theologian, and his influence extended far beyond churches. He inspired the cultural changes that gave rise to the political philosophy of the American founders, a truly extraordinary event in world history. Founding fathers such as George Washington, James Madison, Samuel and John Adams, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson stand on the shoulders of some of the greatest philosophers in all history, and perhaps most of all on the shoulders of this Geneva pastor who preceded them by 200+ years. That we may still look to him as a leader in action indicates that the character of his thought was so robust and sturdy as to leave a legacy for generations.
David Hall is senior minister at Midway Presbyterian Church, Powder Springs, Georgia. A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary, he earned his Ph.D. at Whitefield Theological Seminary.

It has been said of Robert E. Lee that the essence of him was not found in what he said but in what he did - his life was one long response to the call of duty. Lee was a gentleman. Though he lived at a time filled with possibly this country's greatest conflict and turmoil, he emerged with untainted integrity. He maintained a most humble spirit, despite the fact he was revered as one of the greatest military leaders of all time. Carry A Big Stick: The Uncommon Heroism of Theodore Roosevelt by George Grant
$16.95 | Hardcover | 210 pages | Cumberland House
OUR PRICE: $13.75
Theodore Roosevelt stands out as one of the most exceptional leaders in American history. His was a life whose feats were indeed larger than life. But he was a man whose bedrock of existence was founded in a spiritual faith many would envy. Although lauded and honored by kings and peasants alike, his greatest love was for his family. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed a lifelong romance with his wife. He wrote, "No other success in life...comes up to the success of the man and woman who can feel that they have done their duty and that their children...rise up to call them blessed." My personal favorite of the series! Highly recommended!

Glory and Honor: The Musical and Artistic Legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach by Gregory Wilbur
$16.95 | Hardcover | 260 pages | Cumberland House
OUR PRICE: $13.75
Johann Sebastian Bach was a musical genius, an intellectual giant, and a gracious man. His achievements in music are historical - in his own realm, on a par with those of Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Dante, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Milton, Aristotle, Augustine, or Aquinas. Even more compelling is the fact that Bach intentionally wrote all of his music from a Christian perspective and for the glory of God. Bach worked at a crucial time in history. He combated the ideas of the Enlightenment with its elevation of human reason as the ultimate authority of everything. His struggles, musically and professionally, are those of a man seeking to maintain a high view of worship, academics, and the grounding of all life on the Word of God. As a man valiant in his convictions, he stood against the trends and fashions of his day and succeeded as a witness of the gospel to the generations who followed him.

Never Give In: The Extraordinary Character Of Winston Churchill by Stephen Mansfield
$16.95 | Hardcover | 230 pages | Cumberland House
OUR PRICE: $13.75
Hardcover edition, back in print for the first time in three years! There are characters, and then there are people of character. Winston Churchill by any analysis was both. He is one of the most extraordinary leaders the 20th century has produced. For Churchill, leadership was about eternal values, the societies those values produce, and the character needed in the present to pursue the future. Many would be surprised by the authors recounting of Churchill's faith, as I was, but he shows how that faith altered the course of a nation beset by war. Churchill indeed has much to say to our current generation of leadership, caught up as we are in its pop culture and questionable philosophies of leadership. Wonderful insight into a colorful and controversial character.

A Divine Light: The Spiritual Leadership of Jonathan Edwards by David Vaughan
$16.95 | Hardcover | 256 pages | Cumberland House Publishing
OUR PRICE: $13.75
Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) was one of the leading religious thinkers of the colonial era. Educated at Yale, he became the senior pastor of the Congregational Church in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1724 at the age of 21. As pastor of the most influential church in New England at the time, his powerful preaching helped launch the revival of 1734-35 and spearheaded the more extensive Great Awakening of 1740-41. When the awakening came under attack due to various excesses and slanders, he became the leading apologist for experiential religion. His articulate defense of the revival, A Treatise Concerning the Religious Affections, is now considered a masterpiece of the study of the religious mind. He always had a huge passion for missions and evangelism, and so it is no surprise that Edwards spent the last years of his life preaching the gospel to American Indians. As with all volumes in the Leaders in Action series, the first half of Vaughan's book is biographical, the second half being devoted to specific character traits of Edwards.

Apostle of Liberty: The World-Changing Leadership of George Washington by Stephen McDowell
$16.95 | Hardcover | 320 pages | Cumberland House
OUR PRICE: $13.75
A biography of a great man, but also much more: a book that also looks at Washington's unique personal qualities as a leader and how these qualities marked him as a leader among leaders. In doing so, it reveals a man whose greatness did not stem from oratorical skills, superior knowledge, or brilliant military tactics, but from virtue. He understood his duty and his proper role in the fledgling nation, and he pursued it with an invincible resolution. Largely, this was due to his belief that God in his providence had chosen him to lead the new nation that was founded on liberty -- civil, religious, and economic -- and that the experiment that began under his leadership as president of the Constitutional Convention and was successful under his leadership in battle would prosper under his leadership and change the world if given the opportunity to succeed.
