George Alfred Henty (1832-1901) began his storytelling career with his four children. After dinner, he would spend an hour or two, sharing with them a story that would continue the next day. Some went on for weeks! A friend who was present one evening, watching the spellbound reaction of his children, suggested Henty begin to write these out, so others could enjoy them. He took that counsel, and as a result we have 101 of the finest historical novels ever penned!
After doing a thorough study of the time period on which he wanted to write, Henty would rapidly pace back and forth in his study, dictating the story to one of his stenographers, as fast as the man could take it down. Before he passed on from this life, he had been dubbed 'The Prince of Story-Tellers' by contemporary writing critics.
His books are fiercely historically accurate and full of noble character - honesty, chivalry, integrity, courage, loyalty, diligence, charity, and justice.
