Description

The most brilliant, daring and erratic monarch of the 18th century, King Charles XII of Sweden took on a prolonged conflict with the ambitious and violent czar of Russia, Peter the Great, in 1700. In this 18 year war, the Swedish king stunned the Russians with many remarkable victories, including routing 40,000 troops of the czar with only 8,000 Swedes.

In 1745 Prince Charles, the son of the exiled heir to the throne of James II -- the last of the Stuart line but rejected in favor of the Hanoverian line of George II -- secretly entered Scotland with a handful of followers to raise the clans and reclaim the thrones of Scotland and England. The Scottish followers of Bonnie Prince Charlie, mostly highlanders, were known as Jacobites (after the Latin for James) and they flocked to his standard in kilt and war paint to fight the English army.

Henty's hero, Ronald Leslie, joins the rebellion in France and fights in the battles of Dettingen and Fontenoy and thereafter enlists in the uprising in Scotland.

For a year, the Jacobites fight the English armies with some success, until the decisive Battle of Colloden. The clans who followed Charles onto that sanguinary field hurled a screaming attack at the enemy lines wielding their claymores and axes, but were cut down in bunches and virtually destroyed by the artillery fire and bayonets of the redcoats. The survivors and their families were harried from the land or killed. Ronald Leslie survives the disaster and makes his peace with His Majesty's government and returns to a quiet life in Scotland.
