Description

The story of Guy Aylmer, page of Sir Eustace de Villeroy, who defends the Castle of Villeroy from siege, acts as protector for Lady Margaret and the children when they are called to Paris as hostages, and successfully defends them when their house in Paris is attacked by the White Hoods. Aided by an exiled Italian count and his daughter, Guy first hides the family and then helps them to escape to safety. Later, in the serve of King Henry, Guy fights bravely at the historic Battle of Agincourt and is later rewarded royally in Britain for his courage in the battle.

A Tale of the White Hoods of Paris (1415) is the subtitle of this Henty volume. King Henry V renewed his claims to the French throne and invaded France determined to press his claim on the field of battle. John Keegan has best described the excitement of studying the clash in Flanders: Agincourt is one of the most instantly and vividly visualized of all epic passages in English history. It is a victory of the weak over the strong, of the common soldier over the mounted knight, of resolution over bombast, of the desperate, cornered, and far from home, over the proprietorial and cocksure. It is an episode to quicken the interest of any schoolboy bored by a history lesson. ( John Keegan, p.79)

The English hero of this adventure story is Guy Aylmer, a redoubtable English squire, who confronts numerous obstacles in France. He defends his lord's castle but is later given up as a hostage and enters Paris while the city is in the midst of a typical Parisian upheaval-the butchers are in control! After negotiating several tight situations Guy meets an exiled Italian count and his lovely daughter, and, of course, marries her. In the end the hero of the tale ends up at Agincourt, one of the greatest victories of English arms.
