We know that the influence of a mother on her son can be of great importance. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) has been described by some as the greatest of the Church Fathers. Many of the writings of this man of North Africa have influenced almost every sphere of Western thought. Yet if it wasn't for the faithful witness of his mother Monica, Augustine may have remained the smart-aleck, middle-class playboy that he was, and we would never have seen the rise of this giant of church history.
Author Dolina MacCuish has traced the influences on Augustine's life and tells the fascinating story of him being humbled to accept the faith he was taught in childhood, after living a debauched life in Rome and Milan.
Influenced heavily by Ambrose (Bishop of Milan), and his mother, Augustine rejected academic skepticism and started to turn back to God. After the death of his mother he returned to North Africa, where the appeals of many pressed him to go into the ministry, in 391. In only five more years he became the Bishop of Hippo. He died in a besieged city of Hippo in 430, as Roman Africa succumbed to the Vandals.
