Father of Elizabeth Prentiss and widely known in his times as "Praying Payson of Portland." (Maine) His biographer said that "Prayer was pre-eminently the business of his life." He ministered much of his life in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire, but primarily as pastor of the Congregational Church of Portland, Maine.
