Description
Charles George Gordon gained universal respect and affection in the slums of urban Victorian Britain for his spiritual leadership - but not long afterwards in life, he enhanced taht same reputation as he commanded in battle Chinese, Egyptian, and African troops, to become a British military hero.
When General Gordon died while trying to save the Sudanese city of Khartoum from fire and sword in 1885, the mourning from a grateful nation was enormous, one of the most significant funerals in English history. Gladstone, Britain's Prime Minister at the time feared the loss of Gordon would bring down his government. Gordon was one of Britain's greatest military heroes, in the line of men such as Wellington, Nelson, Havelock, Harris and Montgomery.
There are 4 parts to this well-researched and exciting biography:

Book Reviews of GORDON OF KHARTOUM
"Pollock has provided an interesting, readable account of Gordon's life. The book is well-researched and draws from his correspondence to family members and recollections of peers." -- Byron Snapp, Calvary Herald, Calvary Reformed Presbyterian Church
"Gordon's mercurial character comes through with great charm from this narrative - it was not by chance that everyone called him "Charlie' - and biographer John Pollock demonstrates to good effect his un-heroic practicality." -- The Guardian
"This is a respectful, cautious biography... but there is a good tale to tell, deliberately uncluttered by too much analysis or interpretation." -- The Financial Times
"Recounts innumerable instances of heroism, yet in the end Christianity is the hero of the story. Give it a try!" -- The Sunday Times, London
"A really excellent account... This is a shrewd and well-balanced assessment of an outstanding man. Not only an authoritative biography, but it is also highly readable." -- Lieut. Col. Sir Julian Paget
"This major and magisterial book is the most important yet by this shrewd author. It must be read." -- Rev. Maurice Wood
