What does it take for lasting change to take root in someone's life? If you have ever tried, failed, and wondered why, this is perhaps the book for you - or those you counsel. It explains the Biblical patterns which make for serious, lasting change in lives. It's not just a formula based on some advice from the Bible.
"Change doesn't happen overnight for the Christian. It's a lifelong journey. Paul Tripp and Tim Lane masterfully guide us along the Biblical path that points us to the cross and a lifestyle of faith and repentance. I recommend this book all Christians who desire to grow in their relationship with God." -- Tremper Longman, Westmont College
"This book is applied theology. It's about heat, thorns, the cross, and fruit. It's about present grace. In 16 short and well-illustrated chapters, the wonderful prospect of change for the good is held out for the reader. We are called to consider our circumstances and our responses to them, and beneath all that to examine our hearts' desires and to turn afresh to Christ's cross." -- Mark Dever, Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington D.C.
HIGHLIGHTING THE SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS It is with great joy and excitement that I have the opportunity to highlight "How People Change." We are finally experiencing the fruit of faithful students of God's Word who have put in hours of textual study combined with an emphasis on context in order to apply biblical principles to the life and heart. There has been a tendency in the past to segregate doctrine from practice when the Scripture intends to influence the practice with the truth (Ephesians 4:1). It is with great thanksgiving to our Lord that I confidently suggest a book that focuses on the practice of life as that which is molded and shaped by the principles of God's Word.
THE NEED TO REPLACE "BAND-AIDS" WITH HEART SURGERY In our day and age, "practical" books emphasize a "how to" approcah that resonates with our cultures' understanding of problems: that is, ?we are innocent victims of our environment.' This approach relegates the fixing of our problems to slapping a band-aid on symptoms while the source of our problems - the heart - is ignored and excused. This "how to" approach in the "practical books" of our times have led authors and readers alike into the trap of isolating verses of Scripture from their contexts and slapping them onto the symptoms of the heart. The whole context intends to crush our idols with God's sovereignty and supremacy. Lane and Tripp faithfully expose the true spiritual needs of the heart as well as the promises of Scripture that are intended to accomplish the necessary spiritual heart surgery.
THE NEED TO UNDERSTAND DIRECTIONS IN LIGHT OF THE BIG PICTURE On page 92, Tripp and Lane say: "One of the mistakes we make in handling God's Word is that we reduce it to a set of directions on how to live. But the Bible is a "big picture" book. It introduces us to God, defines our identity, lays out the meaning and purpose of life, and shows us where to find help for the one disease that infects us all - sin." Lane and Tripp labor to communicate to their readers that God has given specific biblical directions within the context of the map of God's big picture. Devoid of the big picture, we do not have the necessary spiritual compass to navigate from point A to point B in the matters of life and godliness.
HIGHLIGHTING SPIRITUAL TRUTHS Paul David Tripp (not to be confused with his brother Tedd Tripp) and Timothy Lane carefully unfold the context of Old and New Testament narrative and instruction passages in order to underline God's gracious work in bringing about heart-change through four instruments: heat, thorns, the cross, and fruit. The beginning of the book lays out the Bible's ultimate image for every believer, the image of Jesus Christ. With His image presented as the Father's goal for our lives, both authors show how God uses the heat of trials to unveil the thorns and thistles in our hearts that are contrary to teh image of Christ. We are then invited to take these thorns and thistles to the doctrines of the cross, through faith and repentance, in order to exchange the thorns for the fruit of the beautiful and glorious character of Jesus Christ.
HIGHLIGHTING THE SPIRITUAL BENEFITS "How People Change" is vibrant with the colorful portraits of Tripp and Lane's personal ?heart to heart' illustrations, couple with living, breathing case studies that flesh out the biblical principles in the heart and life. In stark contrast to the typical angle of our day, in which personal examples are made to ring with the authority of self-experience, the motives of the heart and mind come to life in the spiritual lab of the authority and precision of the Word of God. I trust that you will benefit from this book in two ways: 1) you will grow in your understanding and handling of God's Word through the faithful example of Tripp and Lane 2) you will be encouraged to read God's Word for a change of heart according to the measure of the image of Christ."
