Description

This story provides the history of the first part of the Thirty Years' War. The issue had its importance, which has extended to the present day, as it established religious freedom in Germany. The army of the bold and courageous King of Sweden - Gustavus Adolphus - was largely an army of Scotsmen, and among these was the hero of the story.

This enduring and massive war began in Bohemia with the Protestant revolt against Roman Catholic domination. The war went through four phases, the third being the entry into Germany of the Swedish King-the Lion of the North-Gustavus Adolphus. The Protestant champion led the most formidable military machine in Europe and for the first time, the Catholic forces under the experienced General Tilly and the soldier of fortune Wallenstein suffered shattering defeats and fell before the Swede's impassioned and disciplined veterans.

Likened by historians to Alexander the Great, Adolphus animated his soldiers by example rather than rhetoric; he exceeded all others in tactics, organization, and arms, and drove the Catholic imperial army from the field at Brietenfeld and Lutzen, inflicting staggering losses. In the latter engagement, the Swedish King was killed in action, the result of which was the reckless fury of his army in completing the victory.

Scotsmen love a fight and Malcolm Greene is a Scotsman. He is recruited to fight for Sweden under the greatest soldier of the century, Gustavus Adolphus, and duly throws himself into the fray in the great battles of the first half of the Thirty Years War. In the disciplined ranks of the Scotch Brigade we meet Mackay, Hepburn, and Munro-heroes all and destined for greatness. Malcolm confronts rebellious peasants, goes "undercover" as a clockmaker, and in the end marries the lovely Thelka with whom he will live out his days on the moors of Scotland.
