Who was Sukey Harley? Born about 1784, in Shropshire, England, into a family of 16 children, she was poor both as a child and married a poor man at a young age. She lacked education and her husband was a "day laborer among farmers."
This book follows Sukey through her pilgrimage; much of it is seen through her own eyes and quoting her. As a young woman, she comments: "My husband was a very quiet, steady, and sober man; he was never fond of drink, nor of any levity of any sort, like the rest of the young men. I used to despise him and say, "Well, what a fool I have got for a husband!"
Sukey was greatly annoyed at him when he mildly rebuked her habits of swearing. But then her life changed, when God brought her to a deep spiritual conviction of her sinfulness, which awakened a cry in her heart for his mercy. Afterward, as a Christian, she became deeply sensitive to the distress of others but remained lively, cheerful, frank, warmhearted and energetic. She valiantly struggled through adversities, failing health and persistent poverty.
