His book, first published in 1669, was written in the aftermath of the Great Plague of London. Puritan Ralph Venning (1621-1674) served as lecturer in St Olave's, Southwark, until the Great Ejection in 1662. An outstanding preacher, he was author of several books, of which this is his best known.
