@ This is a story of Venice at a period when her strength and splendor were put to the severest tests. The merchant states of the Mediterranean vied for supremacy in the expanding trade upon which European rulers were becoming increasingly dependent.

The hero of this tale is Francis Hammond, son of an English merchant in Venice, who displays a fine sense of manliness and courage which carry him safely through an atmosphere of intrigue, crime, and bloodshed. In his gondola on the canals and lagoons, and in the ships which he rises to command, Hammond succeeds in extricating his friends and himself from imminent dangers, and contributes largely to the victories of the Venetians at Porto d'Anzo and Chioggia. He is honored by the state, and finally wins the hand of the daughter of one of the chief men of Venice. As he does in other volumes, Henty writes "of other empires and aims to point to morals from their history which were relevant to that of Britain" (Berlyne, p. 26).
